In practice, 11+ English papers test several distinct skills at once: comprehension (reading an unseen passage and answering close, inference-based questions under time pressure), vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, cloze passages where a word is missing from a sentence), and, for many exam boards, a short creative or continuous writing task marked separately from the comprehension section.

CEM-style papers tend to blend English with verbal reasoning into mixed, fast-moving question sets, while GL Assessment papers usually keep English as its own discrete paper with more conventional comprehension and writing sections — part of why matching preparation to the target school's actual exam board matters more here than in most subjects.

A tutor working with a Grade 5-6-aged student on 11+ English typically spends real time on timed comprehension technique — skimming for structure before reading for detail, learning to justify an inference with a specific line from the text — alongside targeted vocabulary building, since the vocabulary gap between a well-read ten-year-old and an 11+ pass mark is often wider than parents expect.

Creative writing preparation usually focuses on planning quickly under a strict time limit rather than producing polished prose; examiners are typically looking for a clear structure, a consistent narrative voice, and reasonable command of grammar rather than ambition alone. Because this exam rewards technique as much as raw ability, sessions tend to be diagnostic early on: identifying which of the three or four component skills is weakest before building a working plan around it, rather than treating English as one uniform subject to drill.
