Drop a single invasive species into a lake and watch what happens to everything else in it — the native fish that competed for the same food, the algae bloom that follows if a key grazer disappears, the oxygen levels that shift as a result. That kind of chain reaction is the core habit of mind Environmental Science tries to build: seeing a system rather than an isolated fact.

The course typically moves across several interconnected areas — ecosystems and biomes, population dynamics and carrying capacity, biogeochemical cycles (carbon, nitrogen, water), and human-impact topics like pollution, resource depletion, and climate systems — and the throughline connecting all of them is that changing one part of a system has consequences elsewhere, often ones that aren't obvious until traced through.

Because the subject sits at the intersection of biology, chemistry, earth science, and a fair amount of data interpretation, students who are strong in one of those areas can still get tripped up by another — a student comfortable with biology may find the chemistry underlying nutrient cycles or pH and pollution harder going, and vice versa.

Graphs and data sets come up constantly, whether it's reading a population growth curve, interpreting climate data, or working through a carrying-capacity problem, so comfort with basic quantitative reasoning matters as much as content knowledge.
