French tutoring at this level generally tracks the same progression language teachers describe using the CEFR scale, even when a school course doesn't name it explicitly. Early stages, roughly A1-A2, focus on gender and agreement — every noun is masculine or feminine, and articles, adjectives, and even some verb forms have to agree with it, as in un grand jardin vs. une grande maison — alongside the present tense and basic question formation.

From there, courses typically introduce the two core past tenses: the passé composé, used for completed actions and formed with avoir or être plus a past participle, and the imparfait, used for ongoing or habitual past states. A genuine source of confusion is that English doesn't force this distinction the same way, so students often reach for one tense by default rather than choosing deliberately.

Pronunciation brings its own layer of difficulty distinct from grammar: French has nasal vowels with no direct English equivalent, silent final consonants that reappear through liaison when the next word starts with a vowel, and a rhythm that doesn't stress syllables the way English does. Formality is another thing English speakers tend to under-notice — the tu/vous distinction has no real parallel in modern English and affects verb conjugation, not just word choice.
