Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension splits into two layers that don't always develop at the same pace: literal understanding — what a text actually says — and inferential understanding, what it implies but never states outright. A student can decode every word on the page and still miss the point if they haven't learned to ask what the author is doing beneath the surface: why a character reacts the way they do, what a shift in tone signals, what a passage's structure suggests about its main idea.

Middle-school comprehension work generally centers on a handful of recurring tasks: identifying the main idea versus a supporting detail, distinguishing an author's stated claim from an implied one, and, increasingly as students move toward high school, citing specific textual evidence rather than paraphrasing from memory.

That last skill matters more than it sounds; many students can summarize a passage in their own words but struggle to point to the exact sentence that supports a given answer, which is precisely what standardized reading sections and classroom essay prompts both test for. A tutor working on this typically reads alongside the student rather than assigning passages to complete alone, stopping to ask questions mid-text — what do you think happens next, and why — rather than only checking answers after the fact.

Nonfiction and fiction call for somewhat different strategies: nonfiction comprehension leans on identifying an author's argument and supporting evidence, while fiction leans more on inference about character and theme. Sessions can be built around a student's actual assigned reading, a specific test format like a state reading assessment, or general fiction and nonfiction passages if there's no immediate assignment driving the request. Slower, careful re-reading of a short passage tends to build these skills faster than working through a large volume of material quickly.
