  • About Spoken English tutoring

Spoken English tutoring on TutorA is live and 1:1 following the International curriculum, held in 45-min sessions, 1–2x/week. Sessions build toward building fluency through guided conversation; pronunciation, intonation and natural pacing; confidence speaking in real-world scenarios. Every tutor is reviewed by TutorA's team before being matched, and sessions are paced to where a student is actually starting from rather than a fixed group syllabus.

    What this covers

    • pronunciation: sounds and sentence stress
    • fluency: reducing hesitation and filler words
    • listening at natural conversational speed
    • building confidence to speak in real time

Reading and writing English well doesn't automatically translate into speaking it comfortably in real time, and this gap is a large part of why Spoken English exists as its own subject rather than a subset of general English tutoring. Writing gives a student time to plan a sentence, revise it, and look up a word; speaking demands the same accuracy under time pressure, with no pause button, which is a different skill built through different practice — not more grammar drilling.

Sessions typically work on a handful of distinct threads: pronunciation (individual sounds that don't exist in a student's first language, plus word and sentence stress, since English stress patterns change meaning in ways many languages don't), fluency (reducing hesitation and filler words like "um" without sacrificing accuracy), listening comprehension at natural conversational speed rather than the slower, clearer speech used in classroom audio, and the more intangible skill of confidence — being willing to speak and make mistakes in real time rather than staying silent until a sentence is perfect.

A common early sticking point is that students who are strong on paper sometimes translate mentally from their first language before speaking, which adds a delay and often imports grammar that doesn't match spoken English. Practice that involves actual back-and-forth conversation, rather than scripted dialogue, tends to close that gap faster than more vocabulary study.

A TutorA Spoken English tutor structures sessions around real conversation from early on rather than treating speaking as something to add after grammar is "finished," and adjusts pace and topics based on what a student actually needs — workplace communication, everyday conversation, or accent and pronunciation refinement specifically.
