Vocabulary

The word 'transport' contains the same root as 'portable,' 'report,' and 'import' — the Latin portare, to carry. Once a middle schooler notices that pattern, unfamiliar words stop being random obstacles and start being solvable puzzles. Vocabulary work at this level generally moves along three overlapping tracks: recognizing common Greek and Latin roots (bio, geo, tele, -ology, -graph), using context clues to guess at meaning before reaching for a dictionary, and then practicing active use — spelling and definition mean little if a word never appears in a student's own sentence a week later.

A tutor working through this with a student typically alternates between direct instruction (a short list of roots, a handful of new words tied to that week's reading) and applied practice, asking the student to use a new word out loud or in a written response rather than just matching it to a definition on a worksheet.

Context clues deserve particular attention because they're the skill students actually use outside a vocabulary quiz: figuring out that 'reluctant' probably means hesitant from the sentence around it, rather than stopping to look it up every time. Confusable pairs — affect and effect, imply and infer, farther and further — also tend to surface around this age and are worth targeted attention rather than being left to sort themselves out over time.

Word lists tied to a specific class or textbook can be folded into sessions directly; a tutor can work from a student's actual assigned list rather than a generic one, which tends to produce faster gains because the words show up again on the next quiz. For students without a specific list to work from, sessions can instead build vocabulary through whatever the student is currently reading, pulling unfamiliar words out of the text itself rather than teaching words in isolation.
