    Complete beginners generally need the opposite: script and pronunciation first, then vocabulary and sentence structure built up from nothing.

    Grammatically, Hindi verbs and adjectives agree with the gender of the noun they modify — including in the past tense, where the verb form changes based on the subject's gender in a way English speakers don't expect — and word order is subject-object-verb rather than English's subject-verb-object. Devanagari itself is a phonetic script, which makes pronunciation fairly predictable once you know the letters, unlike English spelling; the harder part is usually the conjunct consonants, where two or more consonant sounds combine into a single written form.
