SAT Reading & Writing

One of the biggest format changes in the digital SAT's Reading & Writing section, compared to the old paper test, is passage length: instead of one long passage followed by ten or so questions, the digital section presents short passages — often just a paragraph — each paired with a single question. This changes the skill being tested in a real way: there's less room to build up context clues across a passage, and more emphasis on picking up exactly what a short piece of text is doing in a compressed space, whether that's identifying an author's central claim, spotting a grammar error, or filling in a logical blank.

Like SAT Math, the section is split into two adaptive modules, with the second module's difficulty responding to performance on the first. Content covers four rough areas: Craft and Structure (vocabulary in context, text structure), Information and Ideas (central ideas, evidence-based reasoning), Standard English Conventions (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure), and Expression of Ideas (rhetorical synthesis, transitions) — and because each question stands on its own short passage, a student can't recover from misreading one passage the way they might on a longer, multi-question one.
