GCSE Preparation Course

GCSEs in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are graded on a 9-1 numerical scale, with 9 the highest and 4 generally treated as a standard pass — a system that replaced the old A*-G letter grades and one that still confuses some students and parents mid-course, since the two scales don't map onto each other in an entirely even way.

Several subjects, including Maths and the sciences, are tiered: students sit either a Foundation tier, capped at around grade 5, or a Higher tier, which opens the top grades but carries a real risk of an ungraded result if a student underperforms badly, and choosing the wrong tier for a student's actual level is a genuine risk worth discussing with a tutor who's watched them work rather than guessing from predicted grades alone.

Exam boards — AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and others — set their own syllabuses and past papers even for subjects with the same name, so a tutor working from the wrong board's material is effectively teaching to a different exam; confirming the exact board and specification when requesting a tutor avoids this entirely. Coursework and non-exam assessment now play a smaller role than they once did in most subjects, with final grades weighted heavily toward terminal exams sat at the end of the two-year course, which puts real pressure on exam technique and past-paper practice in the months beforehand.

A tutor working with a student 1:1 can mark actual past papers against the real board-specific mark scheme, which is a different and more useful exercise than generic subject tutoring, since GCSE marking rewards specific technique — command words, method marks in Maths — as much as raw subject knowledge.
