A common misconception about the TOEFL iBT is that its four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — test four separate skills in isolation. In practice, several tasks are integrated: certain Speaking and Writing tasks ask you to read a short passage, listen to a related lecture or conversation, and then summarize or synthesize both, meaning weak note-taking or listening comprehension can quietly sink a Speaking or Writing score even when your spoken or written English itself is strong.

Students who prep each section as its own silo often miss this connection, which is exactly the kind of gap a 1:1 tutor can catch by watching you work through an integrated task in real time rather than just grading the final response. There are also more conventional tasks that ask you to respond directly to a prompt without a separate reading or listening component first, scored on rubric criteria around development, organization, and language use that reward practiced structure over improvisation.

Each of the four sections is scored 0-30, for a total out of 120, and many students retake the test specifically to raise one weak section rather than the whole thing, since institutions often look at section scores individually rather than only the total.
