What separates strong GRE scorers from average ones usually isn't raw vocabulary or math ability — it's recognizing question patterns under time pressure. The Verbal Reasoning section leans heavily on text completion and sentence equivalence questions that reward reading precisely for logical structure — contrast words, cause-and-effect signals — more than knowing every possible synonym; students who memorize word lists in isolation often still struggle, because several question types ask you to select multiple answers that all fit the same meaning, not just one plausible word.

Quantitative Reasoning covers material most students learned years earlier — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, basic data analysis — so the real difficulty is usually rustiness and traps built into how questions are phrased, not unfamiliar content; quantitative comparison questions in particular reward a specific kind of reasoning, comparing two quantities without necessarily solving both fully, that's rarely taught outside GRE prep itself.

Analytical Writing asks you to construct and support an argument in essay form, scored on task-specific criteria around structure, clarity, and reasoning rather than polish alone — a section many students under-prepare because it's reported separately from the Verbal and Quant scales, even though many programs still weigh it.

A tutor working through your actual missed questions with you can usually tell within a session or two whether an error reflects a content gap, a misread question stem, or a pacing issue — something a raw practice-test score doesn't show on its own. Because ETS's ScoreSelect option lets you choose which test date's scores to send to programs, some students plan a diagnostic attempt followed by a focused retake, which is worth mapping out with your tutor if your timeline allows for it.
