    The IB Diploma's structure is unusual among school-leaving qualifications: students take six subjects, one from each of six groups — studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and an arts or elective sixth subject — normally with three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus a mandatory core of Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service.

    That core is where a lot of IB-specific difficulty actually lives, and where generic subject tutoring falls short: the Extended Essay is an independent research paper in a subject of the student's choosing, assessed on structure and research skill rather than raw content knowledge, and Theory of Knowledge asks students to reason about how knowledge itself is constructed across different disciplines — both are genuinely different skills from sitting a subject exam, and both benefit from a tutor who's actually worked with IB assessment criteria rather than general essay-writing tutoring.

    Each subject is scored 1-7, combined into a total out of 45 including a small number of additional points from TOK and the Extended Essay together, with internal assessments — coursework marked by the school but externally moderated — typically weighted alongside terminal external exams rather than replaced by them entirely, unlike A Levels' now-mostly-exam-only structure.

    HL and SL within the same subject share a core syllabus, but HL adds extra content and, in several subjects, an extra externally assessed component, so a tutor needs to know which level a student is actually sitting, not just the subject name. Because IA deadlines and EE supervision run on the school's own internal calendar rather than a fixed external one, timing tutoring around a student's actual school deadlines matters more here than for most exam prep.
