O-Level Maths

Singapore's O-Level Mathematics is actually two separate subjects that students often conflate: Elementary Mathematics (E Math) and Additional Mathematics (A Math). E Math is the more widely taken of the two and covers number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics at a level intended for general numeracy and everyday application.

A Math is optional, more demanding, and aimed at students heading toward subjects with heavier math content later — it introduces topics closer to pre-calculus: quadratic and simultaneous equations at a higher level, coordinate geometry, more advanced trigonometric identities, and an early introduction to differentiation and integration.

Not every student takes A Math, and it's worth specifying which one — or both — a session should cover, since the content and pace are genuinely different, not just a harder version of the same material. Within either subject, word problems tend to be where students lose the most marks even when they understand the underlying technique, because O-Level questions are usually written to require translating a real-world scenario into an equation before any calculation starts, and that translation step is a skill in itself, separate from algebraic manipulation.

Trigonometry is a common weak point across both subjects — not the formulas themselves, but recognizing which one applies to a given diagram, especially in three-dimensional problems that show up more in A Math.
