PSLE Science

A common misunderstanding about PSLE Science is that it rewards memorized facts — but a large share of the exam is actually testing whether a student can explain an observation using the correct scientific vocabulary and reasoning, not just recall the right term. Open-ended questions ask students to describe why something happens — why a plant near a window grows bent toward the light, why condensation forms on a cold glass — in a full, precise sentence using specific taught vocabulary, and a technically correct answer in the wrong wording can still lose marks against the mark scheme.

The syllabus is organized around a handful of broad themes rather than a single narrative: diversity (classifying living and non-living things by observable characteristics), cycles (life cycles of plants and animals, the water cycle), systems (the human digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, among others), interactions (forces, magnets, light), and energy (forms and conversions).

These themes reappear across the two years of upper-primary science, each time with more depth, so a student's Primary 5 foundation directly affects how much Primary 6 material actually sticks. Diagrams are a recurring weak spot — being able to label a diagram correctly is a different skill from understanding the underlying process, and PSLE questions frequently combine both, asking a student to interpret a diagram and then explain what it shows in writing.
