PSLE Maths

Draw two bars on a page — one for the amount a student starts with, one for the amount after a change — and a surprising share of PSLE Maths word problems become solvable without algebra at all. This is bar modeling, sometimes called model drawing, the method Singapore's primary math curriculum is known for internationally, and it's less a shortcut than the actual intended technique for this exam: instead of jumping to an equation, students represent quantities as proportional rectangular bars and reason visually about the relationships between them, which works especially well for problems involving ratios, fractions, and comparisons that would otherwise require setting up several equations.

Students who learn algebra early sometimes want to skip straight to equations, but PSLE questions are often written expecting the bar-model approach, and markers award method credit for showing the model correctly, so leaning entirely on algebra can cost marks even when the final answer is right. Beyond bar modeling, the syllabus covers whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio, percentage, area and volume, and an introduction to speed, with each topic reappearing in increasingly layered word problems rather than tested in isolation — a single question might combine ratio and fraction concepts in one scenario.

The real difficulty in PSLE Maths is usually less about calculation and more about problem decomposition: figuring out what a multi-step word problem is actually asking, and in what order, before any drawing or calculating starts.
